It was a pleasure interviewing painter Blair Vaughn-Gruler about her exhibition, Compulsive Organization, opening tonight at GVG Contemporary, on Delgado Street at Canyon Road, from 5 to 7.
First, I want to cop to the fact that, in my opinion, this show is simply sweet to look at. Not sickly sweet, just purely enjoyable. This frank accessibility belies the layers of meaning Blair builds into her painted surfaces. She is thinking about how we, the viewers, orient ourselves in space with all its dimensionality, as opposed to the flat surface of the canvas. She's thinking about color and light, and about how to fit the little painted squares and dots into each painting she makes. She begins with a concept that she wishes to explore, sets some rules for herself, and proceeds to explore how to execute that concept in paint.
